A Comparison of the <i>Fanwang jing</i> Commentaries of Ŭijŏk and Sŭngjang

Ŭijŏk 義寂 and Sŭngjang 勝莊 both wrote Fanwang jing 梵網経 commentaries quoting the Yogācārabhūmi 瑜伽師地論. However, there is a decisive difference between them in purpose of such quotations. quoted order to expound jing, but commented on itself. These differences are also related their respective understandings precepts戒律. held position that all sentient beings possess buddha-nature一切衆生悉有仏性. For Sŭngjang, capacity機根 determined through five gotra theory五性各別. This three categories pure precepts三聚浄戒. If one holds theory, interpretation precepts aimed at improvement other 摂衆生戒. The an idea not originally contained jing. it was by many commentators after Zhiyi智顗. theory different from saving people emphasizes. In this study, I compare identify reasons for those problems interpretation.
